Description
Every facet of LAIKA’s Premier Issue captures the kinetic energy of veganism. The issue boldly covers a breathtaking range of topics. It offers essays that explore activist repression and the treatment of animals (The Unmentionable Deed). It includes in-depth profiles of vegan luminaries, such as artists and partners Ruby Roth and Justin Bua (Eat, Paint, Love). A first-of-its kind portrait series (The Survivors), poignantly captures the unique identities of rescued animals. We also bring you gorgeously-photographed stories on vegan fashion and beauty tips, along with features on cutting-edge vegan cuisine (The Secret is Out) and the vegan scene in Europe (United We Stand). And much more, including profiles of young activists, innovative products, and imaginative recipes.
“Built with care and kindness in the spirit of unity and change—it aims to inspire and provoke. We celebrate possibility, courage, child-like curiosity, and taking action.” —Founder Julie Gueraseva
LAIKA’s namesake is a dog who perished on the Sputnik 2 shuttle in 1957 as part of the USSR’s space exploration program. In 1998, the lead scientist on the experiment publicly confessed, “The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it.” The magazine is a tribute to Laika and all animals treated unjustly, and a message of compassion and hope for the future.
